Town of Chitina Ice Climbing - Blackbird Falls

Rating:  WI5
Length: 60 meters

Approach:  Drive through the town of Chitina and stay on the main road.  Pass through a narrow one-lane rock cut and the road will turn to dirt.  Drive down the road for about 1.5 miles until you reach a paved two-lane bridge that crosses the Copper River.  Look to your right across the Chitina River and one will see an obvious waterfall.  The approach across the river can be tricky and proper timing is important.  One needs to go when it is warm enough to climb yet cold enough to cross.

Routes: This climb can be completed in one long pitch or two short pitches.

Anchor: Be prepared to V-thread to descend.
