Gravel Creek

Recently, the word has been spreading about the climbs up the Gravel Creek drainage.  Many never heed the calling because of the somewhat long approach.  The adventure is worth it as one finds themselves crossing the Matanuska River and heading up a huge valley into the foothills of the massive Chugach Mountains.

Pack your skiis or snow machine and head north on the Glenn Highway from Anchorage for just under 2 hours until one reaches the Victory Bible Camp.  Just west of the turnoff for the camp a driveway is found on the south side of the road.  Park near this driveway, say your prayers, and head down the road until you make your way onto the frozen Matanuska River.  From here, directly across the massive river one will find the opening into the Gravel Creek drainage.  Depending on your mode of travel, the climbs can take hours or minutes to reach.

WARNING: Access issues are unknown on the roadway leading down to the Mat River access.  Tread lightly and respect the land owners in this area.
