Kenai Peninsula Ice Climbing - Homer Bluffs

The Homer Bluffs sport some of the most picturesque and esthetic climbs on the Kenai Peninsula.  Due to the ever-changing weather conditions, the routes here are often difficult to predict.  It is recommended that before making a trip to Homer, check the temperature history to make certain the ice has had an adequate amount of cold weather days.

Warning - Do not get caught in the tide.  Make sure you are aware of the current tides in the Homer area as water levels do rise to the base of the ice on a few routes.

Note - The names and ratings of the routes listed in the Homer Bluff section (on this site) may not be correct and it appears there are some discrepancies between this site and the Fat City and Urban Ice guidebook.

Why the discrepancies - The Homer Bluffs consist of an easily erodible soil that has likely been altered by Mother Nature since the guidebook was published (1989).  Also, construction of new residences at the top of the bluffs may have altered drainage patterns.

Route names - The routes to the right (climber's rt) of Close to Home are Granola Cruncher and Creme Puff.  Routes to the left of Close to Home are numbered in ascending order, right to left, starting at number 1.  Close to Home was given number 1, Old Age number 2, and so on to Homer Bluff #9 (the 8th drainage left of Close to Home).

Route rating - It is difficult to compare the existing routes with those listed in the guidebook, so some routes were rated based on visual inspection.

If you come across a route name, description, or rating that you feel contains an error, please let us know by emailing us at aicstaff [at] gmail [dot] com.
