Nenana River Ice Climbing

Just north of Cantwell the Parks highway begins to follow the Nenana River as it begins flowing to the north through the Alaska Mountain Range. This area is more interior to the state and can be a somewhat inhospitable place to climb in the dead of winter.  The short days and extreme temperatures in the middle of winter make this an early and late season area.

From Anchorage, drive north on the Glen Highway approximately 45 minutes.  Take the Parks Highway west and north on the Parks for another 3 to 3.5 hours through Wasilla, Talkeetna, and Cantwell.  Most of the climbs in this area are located just outside of the entrance to Denali National Park.
