Boulder Creek

Postby bln » Sun Dec 13, 2009 10:07 pm

Oz and I did a little recon today via machine. Decent tracks are from Glenn 92 pullout to about 2 miles before Big Bubbler. From there we put in fresh tracks to just past Bubbler then turned around because the machines were taking too much abuse. On the way out we hiked to Taurine and found it in nice condition. Also, Purinton Pillar looked good from the trail. Here are some images.
Enjoy

Thanks for the pics! Can you get back to these climbs with a machine only, or are there routes via foot or skis? I read up on the climbs site, but couldn't get an estimated distance.

Check out the beta here on Boulder Creek. All climbs are 10 plus miles, one way. Obviously, a snow machine is a plus. Let us know if the approach info needs updating.

Check out the beta here on Purinton Creek. It looks like the beta on the approach is wrong and could use a little updating because this climb is not on Boulder Creek. We will get that corrected tonight. The Google image doesn't really do it justice, but it is less than 10 miles on approach. Will let you know when we get it updated.

The short of it is I've never been up close to the Purinton Pillar, only shown the route and the general direction (by Cobb) one can take via machine or skis or snowshoes to get there. Machines are choice for obvious reasons. If not, ski/skins or snowshoes would work but likely require a LONG day. I'll chime in again and provide updates to the guide when I personally get better information (on Purinton P.). Sorry I can't be of more help. Maybe somebody who has been to the route can offer more........

As for the climbs up Boulder, the nearest is Taurine at over 10 miles from the Glenn 92 pullout. Bubbler and Superstition are about 15 miles from the same pullout. Plan on a long day or days if going via skis. The gps cords on the guide are accurate and the Google map at the bottom of the pages provides a good reference.

BLN and I rode out to the pillars at the back of Boulder on Sunday. Weather was good and temps were just below freezing. We found the pillars in decent condition. The left was deeper in color while the right was aerated and chossy. We decided to trust the left pillar and climbed through sticky, dinner-plating, sun-baked, and chossy ice. Probably a WI4. Superstition and Bubbler were in fat. Didn't take a look at Taurine. Maybe I will post pics later.

Snowmachined out Boulder Creek today - Pillars were falling apart before our eyes (see pics).. hiked up to the base of Superstition - lots of rockfall all over the place but in fat, as was bubbler.
Boulder creek 2 was mostly buried with snow.

Went scouting around for some ski descents and hidden ice and noticed a climb I haven't seen before or seen on the guide... anyone recognize this? It looks like a slog to get to the base but is pretty big and WI3ish-looking.. see first pic, left of center middle.

headed out to bubbler on saturday, it was still in fat and so was superstition, still worth the trip out. plenty of snow left for a snowmobile, first few miles is still a bit rough but it smooths out when you get on the creek.
