Placer River Ice Climbing

Just past the turnoff for the Portage River as one heads toward the entrance to the Kenai Peninsula the Placer River Valley opens up wide.  The Alaska Railroad winds its way up this beautiful valley and eventually heads into a narrow canyon where it travels through several tunnel sections.  Most climbs are located in this canyon and as such the area has been more commonly referred to as the Tunnel Section climbs.
