Portage River Ice Climbing
About a one hour drive south of Anchorage on the Seward Highway leads one to the Portage River valley.  This area has a high concentration of easily accessible climbs, some several pitches in length.  Because it is generally a warmer area, the climbs may not be in as consistent conditions as some areas to the north.  However, warmer temperatures can provide a welcome relief to those who prefer not to suffer.
