Ice Guide : Southcentral : South Anchorage : Turnagain Arm : Twin Pillars

Twin Pillars

Rating: WI2 - Twin Pillar Left
WI2 to WI3 - Twin Pillar Right
Length: 20 meters

Twin Pillar Left is the easiest of the two climbs and begins with a short and steep vertical cutain which can also be made easier if one climbs from the far left.

Twin Pillar Right is the bit more vertical and maybe thin in spots, but usually easily protectable in the middle.

Anchor/descent: Small alders above provide the anchor for rappel.

ALERT: Belayers take caution of the passing highway traffic within arms reach while climbers should be aware that falling ice and rock could easily hit the passing traffic below. Simply stated - Use common sense when climbing so as to not ruin the privilege of climbing at this location.

Drive south on the Seward Highway approximately 1 mile past the weigh station. Located just past Rampo (sorry, Rampo is not yet on this site), these climbs offer a bit of easy to moderate ice within close proximity to Anchorage. The climbs are located on the east side of the highway and parking may be difficult.
